A “First Family” of Macoupin County IL
Hugh Miles Enos (1827-1906) was one of the pioneers of Macoupin
Cnty IL
arriving there sometime about 1850 after a reported trip to the gold
fields of California. In 1856 he married an English lass, Mary White in
Macoupin and settled there. His homesite and little community once
appeared on the maps as Enos Station, Bird Twp.
Their children were: (all Enos, all born Enos Station, Bird Twp)
John J. b. 1857 mar. and children unk
Thomas William b. 1859 mar. Eliz. Waters, three children; Victor,
Fern and Ralph
Sarah A. b. 1861 mar. Lewis Waters, children unk
James E. b. 1862 d. 1829 mar. and children unk
Hugh Miles Jr. b. 1865 mar. Laura Mcginnis three children Leon, Melvin
and Lillian
Elvira L. b. 1868 mar and children unk
Edmund b. 1869 died about 10 mo old
Amelia M. b. 1872 m. Bottomly(?) children and dod unk

This
school map shows Enos marked in Bird Township. In 2009, there is
enough "feeling of the land" when you go to the area of the former Enos
that "this is where Enos was."
