Bunker Hill

Military Academy
I have no idea who owned the above post card.

Military Academy Above - located on what is now the American Legion Post hall in the NW section of town on North Marion Street between East Morgan and Seminary streets; the academy was opened for the most part between 1857 and 1913 however there were a few years when it was closed such as during the Civil War and when enrollment was way down since it was a tuition school; East Morgan Street was originally called Academy Avenue

ME Church Above - Believe this is one of the earlier buildings of the Methodist Church on corner of East Warren and Sumner streets

Old Congregational Church Above - original Congregational Church before the 1937 fire; new church building was later destroyed by the 1948 tornado

East Morgan Street Above - then known as Academy Avenue; middle house was once known as Tower View Nursing Home #1 which was owned and operated by my paternal grandmother between 1936 and 1976 and is now a private residence which was renovated by a couple of the owners in the past 32 years - was just in it last spring and some original features were brought back by present owners but can tell you many memories came back from my childhood when visiting or working at the nursing home; house just to the right of the center was my grandparents house and is now owned by a girl who grew up in the house on the other side of it

Franklin Street Above - taken before there were paved streets; unsure which block it is but I grew up on this street on the south end and know that entire street very well since one block before it ends it intersects with East Morgan Street a block from the houses shown on the post card marked East Morgan Street; may be the far north last block where it meets East Clay Street

Old Bunker Hill High School Above - once known as Meissner High School and then Meissner Jr High and more recently Meissner Middle School (I think); closed at the end of last school year.

Bunker Hilll Cemetery Above - I know that there is not a grove of trees there anymore which resemble the layout of those in the photo and nor do I remember them from my childhood years when my grandfather was the caretaker of the cemetery for the Board.  If I had to say which of the 4 entrances to the cemetery it is if it is one of them I would say it's the Park Street entrance, however, I don't trust myself on that.

Lincoln Statue left above looking north.     Lincoln Statue right above looking south.
