State Register Special Service about 1936 - from Karen Greeling
Proves Age By Book Won At Spelling Match
State Register Special Service
Carlinville, Ill., March 13. -- Green Adcock, 79, of North Otter township appeared before the old age pension board Thursday and made application for a pension and in order to establish his age he produced a child story book, which he won in 1867. The inscription in the book read, "Presented to Master Green Adcock for his excellency in spelling, July 11, 1867, by his teacher Nannie Stewart." Miss Stewart was the teacher of district 17, then in North Otter township. Mr Adcock further related how the seats in the school were made; they being made of slabs taken from logs and were put together with pegs. The book he produced was 69 years of age and was in excellent condition. In the book was a paper ten cent piece of money issued in 1854. Each day Mr. Mansfield states, someone brings various objects to the office to assist in establishing their age.
Can you pass an 1895 8th grade final examination?
A copy is located at the Smoky Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina, KS, site? In 1914, Macoupin County 8th graders went to the courthouse to take the 8th grade examination which I would think was similar to this exam.
