Fulton was never an incorporated village. The plat was laid out
but never became a village when the railroad decided to run farther east.

Pleasant Grove est 20 Jul 1848 and disbanded 8 Sep 1849; reestablished
1 Mar 1850; changed to Girard 20 Jan 1855. Otter Creek now Girard changed
from cf Otterville. See Girard Gazette 16 Jun 1955.
Girard's population in 1980 was 2,246 and, in 1990, the population
was 2,164.

Girard Festival Days held the last weekend in July
is sponsored by the Girard Chamber of Commerce.
Activities include a carnival, craft booths, and food booths. The food
booths are sponsored by the Girard Community Schools, the Lions' Club,
and the Girard Fire Protection District. The Firemen's food booth includes
a fish fry, ribeye steaks, and pork chops.

The most northern lake in Macoupin County is Otter
Lake which is located west of Girard and is six miles long. Otter Lake
has public boat launching facilities and is great for water skiing. Camping
sites are scenically located and the fishing is splendid. In 1989, a state
record muskie, 28 pounds 12 ounces and 45 inches long was hooked there.
